updated american idol power rankings – the finale!
Forgive my lack of graphic design skills but I thought the Idol website did a great job of putting this photo together. I was too lazy to try and cut out the link text beneath their names so forgive me if you tried to click the links to no avail!
The finale is here and tonight, the gauntlet is laid down. I think there has been little mystery as to who the show wants to crown as the winner but the question is, do you believe in miracles?
Let me spoil my rankings for you before you click to read more: Kris Allen is number 1, Adam Lambert is number 2.
I am sad as my wife declared her endorsement for Adam Lambert last night. It’s not as bad as my son growing up to tell me one day that he’s a Celtics fan (and when that day comes, I will spank him), but still, there is division in my house at the moment.
Let’s get to it, shall we? Here we go!
The Top 2:
1. KRIS ALLEN
Forget the fact that the last song he sang (the one Kara Dioguardi co-wrote) pretty much SUCKED and anti-climactically ended his string of otherwise strong, solid performances. The question we all have to ask is, who’s album will be sexier? It’s not, who is the most dynamic performer or who has the most charisma or even who is the better singer at this point? The fact of the matter is, both Kris and Adam are here in the finale because they are both dynamite singers so this contest is no longer about choosing the best singer. Truth. Kris is a less girly, less playful version of Jason Mraz (who I have mixed opinions about) and he is also the more versatile and artistic one between the two. (Adam has other things going for him but more on that later.) Let’s not forget that Kris also plays the piano and guitar pretty well so he’s got actual musical ability beyond the voice. Kris can produce an album that is more timely, relevant and easy to listen to. Adam on the other hand will produce something simply for the moment and his sound will fizzle and become tiresome (like it isn’t already?!?).
2. ADAM LAMBERT
What we’re seeing happen on Idol is a classic example of the human (or western?) need for immediate gratification; the judges are enamored with Adam because he is unique (which I agree with) and he is most unlike any other contestant that has been on the show. What they don’t seem to care about is the fact that he does not have the kind of voice or versatility that will allow him to be an enduring figure in the industry for years to come. They simply want to cash in on the novelty that Adam Lambert is. With all this hype and polarized publicity behind Adam, I believe his first album will do well. But let’s wait and see how America reacts once they wake up from the excitement of temporary satisfaction to find that they are left feeling empty and . . . annoyed. My suggestion? Someone needs to write a rock-opera Broadway musical called “Glambert” starring the expert of indulgence himself and that way, everyone is happy: Adam still gets to be famous, his polished yet fake “rock” tone will be in it’s rightful theatric setting, and KIIS FM doesn’t have to play his screaming single every 15 minutes.
The Bold Prediction:
Based on last night’s performances coupled with the shameless weekly endorsements by the judges, ADAM LAMBERT will win tonight. You can bet that throughout America, there will be simultaneous screams of joy along with many broken TV sets and fits of rage. Never has there been a more loved and hated contestant on American Idol than Adam “WHY?” Lambert. Good job, Adam… you have deceived enough people to win and now it has come time to go on your reign of terror.
On a happier note, DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?
*It’s been a pleasure to do these weekly reviews/rankings. Thanks so much for reading and for leaving your thoughts. They are fuel for my writing! Please make sure you give the time of day to my other musings as I put just as much thought into them! Let’s look forward to So You Think You Can Dance together!*
