MUSIC, LEADERSHIP, CULTURE… and humor (sometimes)

updated american idol power rankings – and then there were 3

The great sausage fest of May 2009 kicked off last night and the boys didn’t disappoint– one of them just annoyed and screamed like he always does.  I was feeling Bono’s pain but more on that later. . .

It’s going to be very interesting to see who goes home tonight.  Regardless of who it is, the result will be an incredible letdown for a huge chunk of the American population as I’m sure many have picked sides and have declared their loyalty to one of the 3.  Actually, if you’re like me, you may have declared that you would be down with anyone winning except somebody.  That person for me should be obvious to you all by now!

whoever mixed the sound for the show last night might be fired when the producers review the show.  don’t know if you noticed but one of the background singers during one of Lambert’s songs sounded like she had brought a boost pedal for her microphone.  It’s as if she she made a decision to hijack the moment and like Nacho, wanted a “taste of the glory!”  Pretty funny but annoying stuff.

as this season is nearing a close, the best news is that “So You Think You Can Dance” will debut very soon… May 21 to be exact!  If you haven’t watched this show, you have to.  as much as I enjoyed watching Idol this past year, SYTYCD is actually the purer, more inspiring show in my opinion.  It’s not as bogged down by ratings, marketing, and biased judging.  Can it be anymore clear who the Idol judges want on the winner’s platform next week?  Sickens me!

The Top 3:

1. Kris Allen

Kris was very impressive last night and I think that he deserves to win this competition.  He’s been a quiet force throughout the season, his wife has endured the weekly covetous cries of the American female youth, and he has successfully shed his monkey likeness to become a bonafide star.  He has yet to show that he’s able to pull off a falsetto as proven in his rendition of “Apologize” last night but 1) my falsetto sucks too so I can’t knock his and 2) he makes up for this one weakness by being awesome in his ability to sustain meaningful notes, hit the high ones, and instill his flavor into every song; all the while, carrying himself in a manner of humility that breeds respectable confidence.  He’s ready to win this.  His version of “Heartless” was pretty sick… totally gutsy, original, and blew Kanye and The Fray’s versions out of the water.  In fact, I think it’s always a good move to choose songs featuring the auto-tuner and turning them into more artful interpretations like Kris did there.  America, you are stupid if Kris is not in the top 2.

2. Danny Gokey

After the great debacle of the screaming banchee moment that was last week, Danny had to bounce back this week to even stand a chance.  Did he do enough?  I don’t think so.  In the ideal world, the final 2 would be between Kris and Danny.  But given the fact that Adam Lambert has the shameless endorsement of the judges and those behind the entire show, I feel like Danny may be going home tonight.  I’m ready for surprises though.  Anything can happen.  Seriously.   On another tip, there is something nobody is talking about but I believe it’s worth mentioning and it’s the fact that Danny hasn’t used his painful story as a way to earn the sympathy vote during the past couple months.  Idol highlighted the story of his wife’s death in the early rounds but since then, Danny has quietly gone about his business and sang his heart out.  He could have very easily utilized the “point to the sky” routine after every performance bit or thrown in a “this one’s for her” speech when Seacrest puts the mic in his face but Danny hasn’t done that.  I believe this is one of the most underrated story-lines of the season: Danny is doing this with his wife in mind but he is not exploiting her tragic passing so as to garner more votes.  I respect that.  Big time.

3. Adam Lambert

Cilantro.  You either love it or you hate it.  Adam Lambert is Cilantro and the judges love them some Carne Asada.  Can Kris and Danny overcome the shameless endorsement of the judges?  It was proven a couple weeks ago that Simon Cowell’s words are not strong enough to sway the public opinion (most of the time) but now it will be a test of who has the more loyal fans and who captured the hearts of those on the fence.  I decided I hate Adam Lambert only because he absolutely murdered one of the greatest songs of all time last night, “One” by U2.  Supposedly the U2 camp gave their hearty approval and permission for Adam to sing the tune but I’m pretty sure Bono fell ill last night after the atrocious rendition.  Are we caught in an alternate universe where the same screaming non-sense is praised as originality and virtuosity?  I literally feel like I’m taking crazy pills!  The judges keep saying that Glambert is a Rock and Roll guy but there is absolutely nothing about Adam that screams (pun intended) Rock or Roll!  He is more of an actor taking on the sound and likeness of a rocker and Adam lacks the edge and “street cred” to be a rock star.  His voice is too polished, too theatrical to be considered rock.  Even if you are a fan of Adam, this is something you must understand and acknowledge!  It feels good to spit truth!

My Bold Predictions:

My BOLD prediction is that America wakes up from their slumber to vote Danny and Kris into the top 2, shocking the judges and those who love fake, processed rock and roll!  Adam is gracious in defeat initially but proceeds to scream-shatter the entire Idol set and declares his supremacy despite being voted off.  “You haven’t seen the last of…MEEeeEeEEeeeEEeeEEEeEE!!!!”

I love your review Daniel! I can’t say anything because I haven’t really been following the season very well, but from what I did see, yes, the judges ARE very biased toward Adam. Although I do love him (and think should win), I do think they have been too awed by him. That performance that Simon gave a standing ovation to? I thought it was good, but not THAT good.

What a great word to start that review!

    o man
that is one BOLD prediction, brother!
i would dream of such in a beautiful world
but do we live in one?

i just can’t imagine who’s going home tonite, except that i’m pretty sure it’s either danny or KRIS, with simon literally begging america to put adam through and all…

i have to agree, as much as i love idol, i love SYTYCD even more, with mary’s big teeth and crazy-train yelling!

i too love the cilantro analogy – perfect!

didn’t watch last night’s performances yet, but i do love your analogy of cilantro! people have been passionately in love or in hate with adam all season, haha. as for kris – he is making me love him more week after week with his quiet humility and ability to take criticism with grace. he brings a unique twist to every song he performs… not sure if he is “star” material yet, but i like him.

not a fan of danny at all. i do like that he didn’t bring up his wife at all to get sympathy votes (i didn’t watch the earlier half of this season so i only know about his wife through word of mouth), but for some reason, he has this air of cockiness about him after each performance that really gets to me. if it were up to me, allison would still be here this week.

If only your wishful prediction of Adam’s departure were to come true…but sadly, I’m afraid it won’t. I’ll agree with you that Kris was very good last night, but Danny was better. You also have to give Danny credit for how he recovered, with a combination of good humor and humility, from the crazy notes he hit during last week’s Dream On fiasco. You’re right that anything could happen — but yo, check it out, dude, Kris is going down tonight!

the judges should be ashamed of themselves for how they’re endorsing adam! what happened to objectivity?! i would feel the same way if they were doing the same to kris or danny. they’re totally swaying the vote. totally uncool.

The results show just started, I had to share this experience with I must admit, I have loved me some Lambert, but I hope he loses tonight for one reason: his cilantro is not organic. Bro you said it right– he’s a faker, and where I come from (Sacramento, home of Vlade’s Kings) that just don’t fly. Suck it Adam, this competition deserves to be won by the one who’s got the most SOUL, and that person is Danny.

PS Yet another thing you’re right about DK: Kris’s monkey resemblance. Having just watched the cartoon with Kaylee, I can even tell you specifically which monkey it is– Curious George.

    PS 2: Glee Club??

(the show is biased though…why was katy perry wearing adam’s name on her cap tonight?)
