these are a few of my unfavorite things – hating on coldplay
Every once in a while, I come across a talented and somewhat accomplished musician who proudly proclaims that they hate Coldplay; some of these people are actually my friends. There’s even a scene in the “40 Year Old Virgin” when they imply that anyone who listens to Coldplay is “gay” (their words, not mine!).
There are some common reasons as to why people (claim) they hate Coldplay:
- they are a very commercial and trendy band
- Chris Martin is a tool and he’s fake
- they are rip-offs (Satriani sued them, they sound like U2, etc)
- their stuff is so elementary
- they have no substance
- blah, blah, blah, blah
I think what’s going on here is that the “real” musicians believe they are making a stand against the mainstream by hating on Coldplay. By declaring that Coldplay is lame, they are separating themselves from the rest of the pack, therefore (in their minds) establishing their enduring musical credibility. (BTW, why am I referring to these so-called “real” musicians in this way? Am I not a “real” musician myself? Yes, but I just don’t like to jump on the hate band-wagon too often… unless it’s regarding the Jonas Brothers, in which case I am the conductor of that train…)
It’s fine if you’re gonna hate bands like Coldplay but you should reconsider your reason if it’s simply because they are too mainstream or too popular.
The truth is, it’s more “trendy” to be a hater than it is to be a fan.
